SAVE TAURO BEACHSAVE TAURO BEACH

Tauro Beach in Gran Canaria is not only a local shoreline — it is part of Europe’s shared natural heritage. Every year, millions of visitors from across the world come to Spain to enjoy its public beaches, peaceful landscapes, and open coastal spaces.

Today, Tauro Beach remains fenced off amid unresolved legal, environmental, and safety concerns. At the same time, local residents face displacement and loss of essential utilities.

The Situation

THE HUMAN DIMENSION

For approximately 50 years, families and fishermen have lived along this coastline. Homes are registered, residents have paid taxes, and basic services such as water and electricity were historically provided.

Residents report eviction notices and the disconnection of essential utilities, leaving people without basic living standards.

No one, anywhere in the world, should lose their home or be pressured through the removal of essential services.

LEGAL AND PUBLIC INTEREST

A large-scale redevelopment plan for Tauro Beach was annulled by the courts, and the cancellation was upheld by Spain’s highest judicial authority. The exploitation concession related to the beach has also been declared expired.

Spanish coastal law establishes that maritime-terrestrial coastline forms part of the public domain. Beaches must remain accessible to the public.

Despite this, Tauro Beach has remained fenced off for years.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY CONCERNS

Official technical assessments have identified infrastructure buried beneath imported sand, as well as concerns regarding possible brine discharge from desalination processes.

Reports also indicate sand instability and the formation of sinkholes, raising legitimate safety concerns for beach users.

A public beach must only reopen when it is demonstrably safe and environmentally compliant.

WHY IT MATTERS

WHY THIS MATTERS GLOBALLY

Millions of people from Europe and beyond travel to Spain each year. Tauro Beach is part of a global tourism and natural heritage landscape.

If public beaches can become inaccessible, environmentally uncertain, or socially destabilised in one place, the same risks may arise elsewhere.

Protecting Tauro Beach means protecting the principle that public nature belongs to everyone — today and for future generations.

OUR DEMANDS

The large-scale redevelopment plan for Tauro Beach has already been annulled by the courts, and this decision was upheld by Spain’s highest judicial authority. In addition, the related exploitation concession has been officially declared expired. It is now time to respect the rule of law, protect the community, and safeguard the coastline.

WE ASK FOR

  • No pressure through the removal of water or electricity

  • Restoration of essential services while legal matters are resolved

  • Full public access to the beach, as required by Spanish law

  • An immediate stop to forced displacement

  • Immediate reopening of the traditional beach bars “Vista Mar” and “Pio Pio”, which have operated for decades and are legally registered, in order to restore essential services and basic facilities for beach users.

And our position is clear

We do not want new hotels or large tourist developments in this area. Tauro Beach should remain a place for local residents, families, and traditional coastal life. Its natural and peaceful character is not an obstacle to tourism — it is the reason people come.

! Development is not always progress.
! Sometimes protection is the real future.

Stand with us to keep Tauro Beach public, safe, and human.
